Description
Performing Arts offers pathways for personal development and to improve creative thinking especially in performing arts. BSC's Performing Arts program provides core curriculum for music teachers, professional performers, and live events. Coursework may include music appreciation, music theory, introduction to theatre, world film, stagecraft, stage makeup, applied music, and a full complement of performance opportunities. Students taking Performing Arts courses can apply for several scholarships.
Non-majors and students of all abilities are welcome to study and to participate in BSC bands, Jazz Ensemble, Wind Ensemble, BSC choirs, String Ensemble, BSC chamber ensembles, and/or BSC theatre productions. Participation earns humanities credits toward graduation. All students may study privately with instructors. BSC has scholarships for students in any field who show talent and who actively participate.
Preparation
Performing Arts students should enjoy the process of learning and making music and/or theatre. Some previous experience is helpful but not required.
Requirements
Students completing the suggested curriculum requirements receive a Liberal Arts - Associate in Arts degree and may transfer as a music or theatre major to a four-year college. Bismarck State College has many cooperative, articulation, or transfer agreements with postsecondary institutions both inside and outside of the North Dakota University System. In all cases, students seeking to transfer after completing a degree at BSC should consult the academic catalog of their destination college and work with their academic advisor to plan for this transition.
Career Opportunities
Career possibilities include performer, live event coordinator, talent booking agent, retail/wholesale music professional, private teacher/coach, arts organization administrator, and nonprofit fundraiser.
