Description
The Power Process Technology program prepares students and incumbent workers for careers in the operation of modern industrial facilities, including power generation plants, refineries, biofuel plants, petrochemical facilities, coal gasification plants, and natural gas processing facilities. Students gain comprehensive knowledge of equipment and systems operations, mechanical and chemical technology, and the critical safety culture integral to the industry. Coursework emphasizes technical and safety aspects of plant operations, operator responsibilities, and the principles of generating steam and electricity.
Preparation
Students should be prepared for the physical demands of entry-level technician positions after completing the program. Typical industry requirements often include passing a physical exam, the ability to lift over 50 pounds, and the ability to climb ladders and work in confined spaces or at heights. Job applicants may also be required to pass a drug screening and an eye exam, including the ability to distinguish between colors accurately, which is a key aspect in some maintenance tasks.

Students who complete the curriculum requirements receive an Associate in Applied Science in Power Process Technology.

Employers seek professionals who are detail-oriented posses strong computer skills, and can identify and solve problems. Program Learning Outcomes
Upon graduation, Power Process Technology students will be able to:
- Demonstrate an operator's responsibilities by applying safety, environmental, and ethical standards to maintain professional practices in industrial environments.
- Analyze and interpret piping and instrumentation drawings to support the operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of equipment and systems in industrial facilities.
- Apply foundational principles of mathematics, chemistry, and industry science to ensure efficient and systematic operations in alignment with industry standards.
- Demonstrate the ability to operate, troubleshoot, and communicate effectively in the management of process systems, including boilers, water purification systems, and instrumentation control, ensuring safe and efficient operations.
- Apply knowledge of water purification, boiler operations, and instrumentation control systems to diagnose, maintain, and optimize equipment performance in industrial settings.
- Utilize industry standards and effective communication strategies to interpret data, solve operational challenges, and collaborate in diverse work environments.
- Demonstrate knowledge of power generation systems, turbines, and combined cycle operations by applying principles of equipment design, functionality, and protection to maintain efficiency and safety in industrial environments.
- Analyze and operate refinery, ethanol, distillation, and gas processing systems, including carbon capture technologies, to optimize performance while adhering to environmental and safety standards.
