Program Description
The Data Analytics Technician program provides students with highly marketable skills in data collection, data analysis, communication, organization, time management, and problem solving. Students will develop queries for data conversion into readable, analyzable, and informational documents for employers and other end users.
Curriculum integrates database, spreadsheets, programming/scripting, Python, XML, and SQL training in conjunction with continued mathematics and business courses. Students may complete the program on the Bismarck State College campus, and many courses are available to complete online.
Preparation
Students should enjoy programming, mathematics, be detailed-oriented, enjoy problem-solving, and be interested in working in an office setting. They should be able to type at least 40 words per minute. Students should know how to perform basic file management skills such as saving, deleting, copying, and backing up files. Students should also be comfortable using a Windows-based computer, be able to easily navigate the Internet, and be comfortable using email. High school students should have successfully completed English, computer, business, and math classes. Keyboarding skills are required.
Program Requirements
Those who complete the required curriculum for the two-year program earn an Associate in Applied Science degree. A three-year program is available for those students who may need to take additional time with the curriculum. Many courses in the Data Analytics Technician program may be used for transfer to a four-year information analytics degree program.

Business and industry require data analysis to make critical business decisions every day. Potential employers may include government agencies, educational institutions, sales offices, service agencies, healthcare, insurance companies, banks, utility companies, non-profits, and investment firms.
Program Learning Outcomes
Upon graduation, Data Analytics Technician students will be able to:
- Identify appropriate data and data sources which help resolve business problems requiring data analysis.
- Conduct data analysis using appropriate methods and tools as required for the identified business problem.
- Communicate data analysis results orally, visually and in written form to all audiences which help guide stakeholders in making data-driven decision making.
- Develop problem-solving strategies and decision making, including the transfer of existing knowledge to new technologies for lifelong learning.
- Develop an entry-level knowledge base of data security and data governance processes and procedures.
